Fancy Garden Flag
Hi, I’m Stephanie and I blog over at A Geek In Glasses.
I really love garden flags, the only thing is that I have a hard time finding one that just fits me. Recently I found a source for flag blanks and with the help of the heat transfer vinyl I can create flags that are all me.
Supplies:
Heat T-Shirt Vinyl
Garden Flag Blank
Iron
Honestly, flag blanks are fairly easy to make using a canvas material. First, measure your flag holder. Cut the fabric to fit and stitch a 1/4″ seam around the edge. Then fold over the top to make a pocket for the rod. Really it’s that simple but some days, I just like having them done.
I cut out my text and image, the USA shape, on the Cricut Machine remembering to reverse the image when it is cut so it can be transferred to the fabric.
Next, weed the transfer.
Once the transfers are ready to go, lay them out on the flag. I like to cover the transfers with a clean dish towel. I press the vinyl heat transfers. Check a corner to make sure it has been pressed enough. Then peel off the plastic.
For this project it was easier for me to cut out the USA shape and press the heart over top. To layer the vinyl, press the bottom layer first and peel the clear plastic off. Then position the next layer on top.
Before pressing this cover it with a towel to protect the first layer.
That’s it. A one of a kind garden flag to decorate the house for the holidays.
Enjoy.

very cute! now, what does it mean to “weed” the transfer? thanks!
to “weed” is to remove the excess vinyl. The project is first cut. Then all of the unwanted vinyl is “weeded” out. Then the vinyl can be transferred to its desired location.
Where did you find the blank flags?
Very cute! Where do you find blank flags? I would love to try this!
I have been looking for flag blanks. Could you share where you found them. Thanks!
I found the flag blanks at Dharma Trading Co. They have cotton and nylon options. Have fun making your own flags!!
I love the idea of making your own garden flags, what a great idea! Can you tell me what setting you use on your iron to iron on the vinyl? I know irons are different. It at least it would give me an idea. Thank you!
I use the middle setting. On my iron it is a 4. I think I have to use a little higher of a setting because I place a clean towel over the transfers and have to press through that and heat the transfer. The reason I use the towel is because once I pressed something and there was a funk on my iron (read: never let husbands use the iron…) and it made horrible marks on the fabric and ruined the transfers and fabric.
So that is how I press the transfers. Hope that helps.
How fun!

i am freaking out over how cute this is!!!!! ahh!!! I can’t wait to make my own personalized garden flags!!
Did you use the cotton flags or the nylon. Which one is better to use with the heat transfer vinyl?
Thank you
I recommend the cotton flags. The nylon ones are fine for small transfers, but if you plan on using a large transfer the nylon isn’t the best. What happens is that the heat transfer shinrks a little bit when it cools down and the nylon puckers.
