I want to address something pretty simple today, but worthwhile! Several people have asked me about how to make really long vinyl cuts, so why not do a tutorial…..
You’ll want to make things long like quotes and sayings where you don’t want to be limited to the size of your cutting mat. You can cut vinyl without the mat! So however long your roll of vinyl is, that’s how long you can make your image. For example, here I’m using a piece of vinyl that’s 24 inches long to make a decal for a car:

See how the template is much larger than the cutting mat – it’s easy to adjust. Over on the right-hand side you ‘ll see a place to set your height and width – - change those to match the size of the vinyl you are using. It’s that simple!!

I have used this to put up a quote by our treadmill – here it is sitting in the corner:

And when you’re on it, you have this on the wall looking back at you, urging you to keep going:

I LOVE to be able to cut things the length of the vinyl I’m using – it opens up the vinyl cutting to so many possibilities. Enjoy!!

Any tips for keeping it straight? The lines on the Cameo to line up the vinyl/mat are not very big or long. My concern is that I may get it straight in the beginning, but how to keep it straight is what I’m worried about. Especially if the project may come close to the bottom/top of that vinyl.
Thanks,
Cristy
My cutting mat does not line up with the one on the screen. I have to place it higher on the mat to get it right. I couldnt find it in them manual. I really want to make the calendar in the picture frame but it won’t line up. Thanks for the tip. I just got my 12×24 cutting mat and I am dying to us it. Thanks.
I have difficulty keeping the vinyl in place. The vinyl starts slipping around and the cutting gets screwed up every time. I actually contacted Silhouette about it and they just said to make sure the vinyl was correctly placed and the edges securely in the rubber rollers. I always do that and even hold the end of the vinyl to help it to keep from slipping. It still always slips and moves around! Would love any suggestions you might have.
Great quote!! I need that inspiration to exercise too
I love cutting longer then the mat too…the possibilities are endless!

Aileen I always load it and then hold down the down arrow to feed it all the way through almost to the very end (ust stop before it lets loose at the far end) and then feed it all the way back to the beginning with the up arrow, to make sure it is straight and will not come loose anywhere before cutting. I just had to redo it about 10 times before I had it where it is feeding through with only a little crookedness towards the end, and where it won’t come loose of the rollers and slip anywhere. I don’t know how to keep it from doing it at all, nor have I perfected loading it so it doesn’t take 10 tries to get it right, but feeding it through to test how much it slips so you can unload and try again does help prevent wasting a bunch of vinyl. admittedly I found this post because I was looking for tips on keeping it from doing it at all…as well as where to align the vinyl so that if I have images close to the margin it doesn’t mess up along the edges because I’ve loaded to far in either direction. it needs a tray like a printer has that will keep it straight and line it up just right!
