Don’t you just love when an idea in your head finally comes together? A sweet friend recently had a baby boy and I was racking my brain trying to come up with a gift that was personal but also something that she could use somehow. So I found out the colors in her baby’s nursery and this is what I came up with!
I bought a plain 16×20 canvas board from Michael’s Craft Stores. It comes in a very stark white so I purchased Distress Ink in Walnut and applied it using a foam brush and water to give it an aged look.
Next I set up my wording for the board using various fonts and sizes. Her primary colors where light blue, navy and white. I used the permanent vinyl in light blue, navy and tan. I cut and then weed my vinyl using vinyl tape. I then cut out each word and layed it out on the board to see how I wanted to set it up.
I then began with my biggest words first and fixed them onto the board peeling back the tape backing.
Once I had layed out all the words just like I wanted them, I used Modge Podge and applied it with a foam brush to cover the entire canvas and affix the vinyl to the canvas so that it does not peel up.
I hope she loves it! I think I will have two make two for my own boys’ rooms now! If you have any questions on this project feel free to leave me a message. I can also be found over at Two Prince Bakery Theater!

I have a few questions… I have used vinyl before but I don’t understand what you mean by wedded they vinyl after you cut it out? Just to be sure I do this correctly you used the mod podge after you removed your tranfer tape? Thanks so much.
Hi Katy,
Sorry that was unclear, it was a typo on my part. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I have already corrected it on the post! It’s supposed to say Weed, which is the process when you remove the cut out vinyl image or letters from the vinyl backing and use the vinyl transter tape to adhere it to. Then once you have the letters on the transfer tape. You lay out the words how you would like to have them on the canvas. Take the transfer tape with the letters you are putting on the canvas and then “rub on” the letters unto the canvas so that it sticks. Just so you know be careful because the letters will not want to stick very well to the canvas because of the distress ink. Once all the letters are where you want them without the tape and are stuck to the canvas, you take a foam brush and gently ,so as to not move the letters or edges that aren’t sticking very well around , paint modge podge over entire front of canvas. this will make it stick and “seal” the letters onto the canvas. It came out super cute, I am going to give it to my friend tomorrow! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Sometimes it’s hard to explain a project because I don’t know how much experience people have using vinyl! Thanks! Dorangela
Love your project! I am always looking for ideas. Thanks.
Thanks Ruby! It was super simple once I figured out what I wanted to do. Hope you come visit me over at my blog for other fun projects! Love, D
This is the cutest baby gift idea!
Hi, I just have a quick question about apply the distressing ink with the foam brush and the water. Can you give me a little more detail as to how you did this. Mine is just not turning out to good. Did you just dampen the foam brush and then put it on the pad and just brush back and forth. Thanks for the info. Beautiful job!
Hi Kaleen,
It was my very first time using the distress ink so I know it can be a little strange. I really just played around with it until I got it just like I wanted it. I would not recommend placing the ink pad right on the canvas but rather wet the foam sponge then apply the ink to the wet sponge and brush all around the canvas. It will not look perfect that’s why its distressed. Once you put the vinyl lettering over it it will look much better. Another trick make sure that the canvas is completely dry before you try to apply the lettering. Apply the lettering very gently. If you see that it’s not wanting to stick to the canvas, apply a very thin layer of modge podge to the area you are going to apply to then place the lettering. If you have any more questions ask away! Love, Dorangela
Hi,
I am so happy to find this! I am going to purchase a vinyl decal from Etsy.com for my daughter’s nursery. The nursery is painted panel so I cannot just stick teh decal to the wall. I have been searching and searching for something that said it would somehow work with canvas. Thanks for the insight, and the information!
It is soooo appreciated.
MODGE PODGE works! Yeah!
Thanks Again, Katie
Hi Katie. Yay! Do glad that I could help, this is why I started my blog. I would love for you to come check it out you can find me here http://twoprincebakerytheater.blogspot.com and on Facebook! Love. Dorangela
Hi! I have a quick question, what type of Mod Podge did you use (matte, glossy, satin)? I would like to use glossy, but not sure how that would work over the vinyl. Thanks, Melissa
Hi Melissa, I used Satin. I’m
Afraid if you used glossy on canvas you would see each stroke of the brush. You may be able to use glossy if you did the subway art on a different surface. Love. D
